Hey There

Greetings from sunny (no, wait… almost) downtown Melbourne.

You know how in job interviews they ask dumb questions like: “What’s something positive, and what’s something negative about you”? Turns out being a writer has occasional side benefits in real life. A few years ago, my author creativity popped out – “Hmm. I can get bored unless I’m constantly challenged.” for ‘something negative’.The interviewer thought it was a great answer, and I didn’t tell them that up until that point I would usually answer: “I have a short attention span.”This requirement for ‘constant challenge’ doesn’t only relate to work. It also rears it’s head when it comes to other areas such as music (Spotify has given up trying to work out what my playlist suggestions should be) and writing.

Which is why my recent list of publications are:

Colin Calls the Help Desk – Business comedy – all funny
– Funny You Should Ask – Short stories – half funny/half dark
The Stowaway – Sci-fi. Not really funny (I’m rewriting this, so wait for the new version)
– A non-fiction book about Teamwork – not at all funny
– And now Connection Lost – Romantic Suspense (occasional funny bits).

My What’s My Age Again? podcast co-host Scott (that’s him there) asked me last episode why I set out to write a Romantic Suspense novel.I responded with a resounding shrug. Which he quickly pointed out was not a helpful response for an audio podcast.

I replied, “I didn’t set out to write a Romantic Suspense. It just turned out that way.” (which I probably say more often than I should, now I think about it).

But essentially it was an idea to combine my writing with my job, and develop a kind-of cybercrime (think scams, more than computers) related romance.

Anyway, I thought you might like a quick rundown of the main characters:

Belinda – She’s good at her job and used to like it, but now it’s become tedious and she has an arsehole boss. She enjoys Romance novels as way to escape her ‘marriage’ (air quotes) to Dick. She deserves better, but like many of us, doesn’t really want to admit to herself she’s stuck in a hole.

Dick – (little behind the scenes for you) Dick’s name was initially a placeholder, because it was an accurate description of him. I ended up leaving it, because, well, it’s an accurate description of him (think – hookers, cocaine, fraud, that type of stuff).

– Enter James – He’s a little weird, but fun and exciting. He and Belinda become friends, and he helps her realise that she does deserve more than the sham of a marriage and crappy job she’s trapped in.

I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s misdirection, revenge, intrigue, secrets, a missing father, and obviously, a growing relationship.

It’s available now on Amazon.

Bonus Content!

For new subscribers – I work in cybersecurity, so I like to take the opportunity to spread a little bit of info to help keep people safe online.

This month – Passwords.
You know how us cyber people keep saying – Thou shalt have a strong password!

Well, I thought I’d show you what a strong password actually looks like.

We all (hopefully) know that mypassword is not a strong password because it needs upper case, numbers and special characters. So mypassword cleverly morphs into MyPa$$w0rd!  and everyone walks away happy.

Except that MyPa$$w0rd! isn’t a strong password.

Because the cybercriminals swap the s for a $ and o for 0 too.

The time it takes for a computer guess mypassword? – 0.001 seconds. The time it takes to guess MyPa$$w0rd! – 0.001 seconds…

So what is a strong password?

It’s a combination of two items:

Complexity – Guess what? If you’re a bad speller, you already have complexity in your corner. If you spelt Password as Passwerd the time to guess jumps up to 3 days (unfortunately criminals spend a couple of months guessing) so we also need…
Length
– Simply put: Longer is better (you there in the back, stop sniggering). Try to stick to a minimum of 16 characters if you can.

MiPasswerdIzR@ellyStronk% is complex and long and would take two-thousand-trillion years to guess which is a slight overkill, but you see where I’m coming from.

Well, I think that about wraps it up for issue three, because I need to spend some time procrastinating about finishing my Stowaway re-rewrite.

Cheers till next time
